Amazon MWS Marketplace

Most Amazon sellers use the Amazon login interface to manage products one by one. I endeavoured to list 18,000 QBike items on Amazon using the MWS Marketplace API, which is a JSON-based communication using XML files. It seemed easy enough at the start - download and customize PHP libraries and sample code - yet this turned out to be quite a tricky project.

There are 4 types of data which need to be communicated to Amazon:

  • Product Data
  • Inventory
  • Prices
  • Override Data
The product data needs careful treatment, especially as regards matching products on Amazon using either a UPC or the Amazon-internal ASIN code. Once complete, this XML upload does not need to recur.

The inventory data and price data must update many times a day. By and large, this is a straightforward process, except for one key thing: getting the PHP code to work in cron.
